This week, Dr. Mark Scullard presented a Leader’s Guide to Unlocking Team Potential, focusing on empowering your direct reports. As this was an Everything DiSC® webinar, his presentation naturally focused on using the DiSC® model.
The brilliance of this webinar was the use of DiSC combined with the four essential elements that are key to truly empowering every individual. The graphic above shows these four elements of empowerment:
Authority
Connections
Clarity
Guidance
Each DiSC style (D-Dominance, i – Influence, S – Steadiness, and C – Consciousness) means that as managers, we each have our natural strengths with these elements that are literally second nature to us, and we use in an ‘auto-pilot’ fashion when delegating. However, we each have natural blind spots too. So, for example the D style has a natural affinity towards fostering Authority but is likely to have a blind spot when it comes to providing sufficient guidance.
When empowering our direct reports, we need to provide all four elements to create a sense of complete ownership.
We each have our strengths and blind spots, and of course, each of our direct reports has preferences and tendencies based on their DiSC style. So, you need to be thoughtful and consider how to provide all four elements based on your DiSC style and that of your direct report.
